Program Chairperson Ronnie Lichtman is delighted to announce the recent publication of her newest book, Dr. Guttmacher's Pregnancy, Birth and Family Planning. She was fortunate to be asked to update and revise the oldest pregnancy guide for women and families, a book that was revolutionary when first written by Dr. Guttmacher in the 1930s. With its content almost wholly revised or completely new and a voice that reflects the 21st century, Pregnancy, Birth and Family Planning provides comprehensive information on just about anything a woman could want to know about these topics, while maintaining a philosophy of the normalcy of pregnancy.

The book emphasizes a woman's right to choose between a doctor or midwife for her health care and gives her plenty of information to help in making that choice. Written with two physician colleagues, it is an example of successful interdisciplinary collaboration.

The revised content of Pregnancy, Birth and Family Planning includes:

  • choosing a doctor or midwife for your pregnancy care
  • choosing among a hospital, birth center, or home birth
  • what to expect at prenatal visits
  • morning sickness and other common discomforts of pregnancy
  • genetics and genetic testing
  • early fetal assessment
  • keeping your environment safe for your fetus
  • eating well in pregnancy
  • the effects of infectious diseases on the fetus
  • normal labor and delivery
  • complications of labor and delivery
  • controversies in maternity care, such as routine ultrasound, widespread use of electronic fetal monitoring, epidural anesthesia, and episiotomy
  • multiple birth
  • newborn care
  • postpartum care
  • infertility
  • emergency contraception and old and new methods of birth control AND MUCH MUCH MORE!!!
