Dr. Orit Markowitz is an Assistant Professor of Dermatology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and is the director of Pigmented Lesions and Skin Cancer in the Department of Dermatology in the Faculty Practice Mount Sinai Doctors. Additionally, she serves as chief of Dermatology at Queens Hospital Center-Icahn School of Medicine and also as the director of the Pigmented Lesions Clinic at the Brooklyn Veterans Hospital of Downstate University Medical Center. Dr. Markowitz has directed a joint Mount Sinai and Downstate University Medical Center research fellowship in non-invasive imaging of skin cancer.
Conducting research in the use of non-invasive imaging in the detection of skin cancer since 2007, Dr. Markowitz is recognized nationally and locally for her expertise in the use of optical coherence tomography. Currently, she is serving as the president of the International Optical Coherence Tomography Society. She has been recognized for her work by the American Academy of Dermatology, serving as the director of the Non-invasive Imaging Forum at the Annual Meeting of the Academy during the past three years. Dr. Markowitz has published in a variety of journals on a broad range of topics including, the treatment of actinic keratoses and the diagnosis of non-melanoma skin cancer. Dr. Markowitz has also co-authored a chapter on malignant melanoma in the world-renowned textbook Treatment of Skin Disease (3rd and 4th Editions). Known as a gifted speaker, she has presented at international and national conferences, focusing on her research on non-invasive imaging skin cancer and its diagnosis and treatment.
An avid teacher, Dr. Markowitz directs the Greater New York Dermoscopy course annually for residents in New York and surrounding areas, helping to deepen their understanding of the use of this procedure in the detection of skin cancer.
Currently, Dr. Markowitz is involved in confocal microscopy and optical coherence tomography live skin imaging research, which investigates the diagnosis and treatment of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers.
