Admissions Committee Policies
The charge of the Admissions Committee of the College of Medicine is to evaluate and select the members of the incoming first year medical school class and any applicants entering as transfer students into the third year.
The Admissions Committee reviews any policies regarding admissions.
The Admissions Committee is advisory to the Dean of the College of Medicine, and makes a report to the Executive Committee of the Faculty on a yearly basis. To facilitate this, two representatives (the President of the Executive Committee and the Chair of the Subcommittee on Admissions or their surrogates) attend the first meeting of the Admissions Committee each year. At this meeting, both verbal and written reports are provided to them detailing the class statistics (demographic and numerical) for the entering class and the prior year class. Every two years an additional Outcomes Report is provided, which, lists entering class grade point averages and MCAT scores, and tracks the progress of at least five years of classes.
The Admissions Committee is composed of at least 10 faculty members drawn from clinical and basic sciences, including one member who serves as a liaison to the School of Graduate Studies and is responsible for coordinating the evaluation of applicants to the MD PhD program. One additional member serves as a liaison to the College of Medicine Alumni Association. There are a maximum of two administrative support members. There are four medical student members in good academic standing. At any meeting there must be a majority of faculty members present for a vote to be valid.
The chair or co-chairs of the Admissions Committee are selected by the Dean of the College of Medicine. The chair or one of the co-chairs of the Admissions Committee is the Dean of Admissions.
New members of the Committee are appointed by the Dean of the College of Medicine after recommendations are sought from the Executive Committee of the Faculty. There is also recruitment from the pool of current interviewers.
Terms of Office:
The chair or co-chairs of the Admissions Committee are appointed for a five-year term
with an option for reappointment by the Dean of the College of Medicine. There is
no limit set for the number of terms.
The members of the Admissions Committee are appointed for a one-year term, with an annual option for reappointment by the Dean of the College of Medicine. There is no maximum length of service, but performance on the Committee is taken into consideration before reappointment. New members are appointed in a staggered manner to ensure consistency in the candidate selection process.
Student members are appointed for only a one-year term.
