Diagnostic Medical Imaging Sonography Program

Bachelor of Science Degree

Sonography

Sonographers are a key part of the health care team.

Using sophisticated equipment, sonographers produce images of internal body structures that are often startling in their depth and clarity. The images enable physicians to detect and treat heart disease, vascular blockages, gallstones, and other conditions...or monitor the health of a growing fetus. Because it involves no radiation, sonography avoids the possible hazards of some other diagnostic technologies.

Recently re-accredited in General and Cardiac Sonography, 2018-2028!

Diagnostic Medical Sonography is one of the fastest growing diagnostic fields because it uses a non-invasive, painless and acceptably safe source -- high frequency sound. Diagnostic medical sonographers use high-tech ultrasound equipment, which enables dynamic visualization of the organs within the body, to produce and evaluate ultrasound images and related data that are used by physicians to make medical diagnosis. Sonographers function as integral members of the health care team, communicating with patients, physicians, hospital staff and colleagues.

Diagnostic Medical Sonography is among the fastest-growing professions in health care.

Sonography is:
  • DYNAMIC - Sonography is the diagnostic tool of choice in a broad range of medical settings. Demand for trained professionals is rising sharply.
  • EXCITING - Sonographers contribute to medical diagnoses, routinely conferring with physicians and hospital staff. You'll find the work fast-paced and varied.
  • CHALLENGING - Downstate-trained sonographers are not technicians or medical assistants, but respected professionals who bring analytical skills, expertise, and critical judgment to their work.
  • SATISFYING - If you have an interest in computer technology and in the inner workings of the human body, and you get satisfaction from helping people, you're the type of person most likely to succeed as a professional sonographer.
