Gynecologic Oncology Centers of Excellence
Gynecologic Oncology Center of Excellence provides our patients with comprehensive surgical and chemotherapeutic treatment for invasive and pre-invasive diseases of the female genital tract. For many decades, our gynecologic oncology team has been recognized as the leader in treating gynecologic malignancies and for its compassionate and excellent quality care. The gynecologic oncology service contributes to the treatment of gynecologic cancers in three major areas:
- Clinical management of invasive and pre-invasive diseases
- Clinical and translational researches
- Educating and training the next generation gynecologic cancer specialists
Clinical management of invasive and pre-invasive diseases
The gynecologic oncology service provides surgical and chemotherapeutic treatment, and collaborates with the radiation oncology service in providing radiotherapy for patients with gynecologic cancers. The pre-invasive disease of the female genital tract includes cervical, vaginal, and vulvar dysplasia, atypical endometrial hyperplasia, and gestational trophoblastic disease. The invasive disease includes malignant neoplasm of the uterus, ovary, cervix, vulva, vagina, fallopian tube, primary peritoneum, and gestational trophoblastic neoplasm and choriocarcinoma. The surgical procedures performed by our gynecologic oncology team range from excisional biopsy and loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) to major laparotomy and debulking surgery, surgical staging, and exenterative procedures. Our gynecologic oncology surgeons are also leaders in the field of minimally invasive surgery, performing comprehensive laparoscopic and robotic surgery for benign and malignant gynecologic conditions. The gynecologic oncology service also provides genetic counseling and management of hereditary mutations related to gynecologic cancers, palliative care and survivorship planning.
Clinical and translational researches
For several decades, our gynecologic oncology physicians have advanced the national and international standards of care for women with gynecologic cancer by participating as a full member of the Gynecologic Oncology Group of National Cancer Institute (NCI). The gynecologic oncology service provides our patients not only the options to enroll in NCI-sponsored clinical trials, but also industry-sponsored clinical trials of new anti-cancer drugs and/or regimens.
Besides clinical trials involving patient treatments, the gynecologic oncology service also actively conducts and participates in collaborative clinical and translational research with basic science researchers and other clinical departments, such as Psychiatry, Radiation Oncology, and Surgery, in order to further advance our knowledge in cancer research as well as improving patient care.
Educating and training the next generation gynecologic cancer specialists
The gynecologic oncology service not only provides clinical services and conducts cancer research at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, but also carries an important educational mission in training the next generation gynecologic oncologists. The Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship Program is one of the forty-five accredited training programs in the country. By providing comprehensive trainings in medical and surgical management, palliative care, and clinical research in gynecologic oncology, we are able to have a bigger impact in treating gynecologic cancers.
