Prospective Applicants

How to Apply to Our Program

PROSPECTIVE APPLICANTS should contact ERAS – The Electronic Residency Application Service to apply to our program on line.

Applicants for appointments at SUNY Downstate Medical Center must be graduates of medical schools accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). Criteria for receiving an interview are:

  • We do not set a minimum USMLE Step One score for granting an interview, nor is this metric evaluated in a vacuum; other factors are evaluated, including subsequent Step Two scores. In general, our successful candidates have Step One scores similar to that of matriculating CA-1 residents at other anesthesiology residencies, that is, 225-230.
  • No more than 5 years past medical school graduation without any clinical training.

Our program offers 15 categorical positions which include the PGY-1 year and 2-4 CA-1 positions beginning in the PGY-2 year. Students must register with the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) for both first and second-year positions.

Completion of USMLE CS is required before entering the PGY-1 year. Completion of USMLE Step 3 is strongly recommended to be completed before the end of the PGY-1 year; it is University policy that Step 3 be completed before beginning the PGY-3 (CA-2) year.
