F. C. Valentine Fellowships of the New York Academy of Medicine
This fellowship grant supports a graduating urology resident during fellowship training years.

FELLOWSHIPS AWARDED TO OUR GRADUATES:

Marc Goldstein, MD 1980 - Dr. Goldstein developed an interest in microsurgery during his residency. As a resident with us, he spent a month elective in St. Louis where he underwent special training by Dr. Sherman Silber in urologic microsurgery. Dr. Goldstein was awarded an F.C. Valentine fellowship of the New York Academy of Medicine, Section on Urology and an AUA scholars fellowship. He spent two fellowship years at the Rockefeller University studying andrology and microsurgery. At the conclusion of his training, he joined the full-time staff of the Department of Urology of the Cornell Medical School and is currently Professor of Urology. He is the Director of the Division of Reproductive Urology. He is a world authority in his field.

Robert Wasnick, MD 1980 - After completing his residency, Dr. Wasnick was awarded a Bowen-Brooks fellowship by the New York Academy of Medicine. He underwent a fellowship at Alder Hay Children's Hospital in Liverpool, England with Mr. Herbert Johnston. He is now on the full-time faculty of SUNY/Stony Brook as Professor and Chief of Pediatric Urology.

Thomas Lue, MD 1981- During his residency, Dr. Lue developed an interest in sexual dysfunction. He was awarded an F.C. Valentine fellowship of the New York Academy of Medicine, Section on Urology. His fellowship year was spent at the University of California, San Francisco with Dr. Emil Tanagho. Upon completion of his fellowship, Dr. Lue joined the staff at that institution and is currently Professor of Urology. Dr. Lue was the winner of the grand prize in the national AUA prize essay contest for his work on penile physiology. He was also given the Gold Cystoscope Award by the AUA. He is a world's authority on the physiology of penile erection and erectile dysfunction.

Michael Fleisher, MD 1982 - During his residency, Dr. Fleisher developed an interest in pediatric urology. He was awarded a prestigious fellowship in pediatric urology serving with Dr. Bernard Churchill in Toronto. Upon completion of the fellowship, Dr. Fleisher was appointed to the full-time staff of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey - Robert Wood Johnson Medical School as chief of Pediatric Urology. He is now in private practice as Clinical Associate Professor at UMDNJ-RWJ Medical School.

Deepak Sheth, MD 1986 - Dr. Sheth developed an interest in the interaction between radiation and intravesical chemotherapy during his residency. He was awarded an F.C. Valentine fellowship of the New York Academy of Medicine, Section on Urology. He spent the fellowship year at our institution studying radiation and chemotherapeutic interactions as well as other aspects of the treatment of carcinoma of the bladder.

Yitzak Berger, MD 1985 - During his residency, Dr. Berger developed an interest in urodynamics. He undertook a fellowship in the Department of Urology of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University under Dr. Jerry Blaivis. He was a member of the full time staff of the Department of Urology at UMDNJ - RWJ and is now in private practice, practicing neuro-urology and female urology exclusively.

Edward White, MD 1988 - Upon his completion of residency with us, Dr. White studied under Dr. Arthur Smith where he specialized in endourologic percutaneous techniques. He was formerly acting Chairman of the Department of Urology at UMDNJ - RWJ and remains a member of the teaching faculty.

Brett Mellinger, MD 1985 - Dr. Mellinger was awarded an American Urological Association Scholars fellowship and an F.C. Valentine fellowship from the New York Academy of Medicine. He spent the two year fellowship at Cornell Medical School and the Population Council, Center for Biochemical Research where his studies included special emphasis on impotency and infertility. His fellowship was directed by another former resident, Dr. Marc Goldstein, mentioned above. He was formerly the Chief of Infertility-Impotency at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and is now Chairman of Urology at Winthrop University Hospital. He is on the faculties of the Colleges of Medicine at Albert Einstein and SUNY - Stony Brook.

Marelyn Medina, MD 1985 - After completing her urologic training. She completed a two year fellowship with our Division of Transplant Surgery.

Victor Nitti, MD 1991 - He was awarded a fellowship in female urology, studying under Dr. Shlomo Raz at UCLA. He has risen to national prominence. He is now on the faculty at NYU as Director of Female Urology and Vice-Chairman of the department.

Mark Horowitz, MD 1992 - He was awarded a 2 year fellowship in pediatric urology (1 yr. lab/1 yr. clinical) with Dr. Michael Mitchell at the University of Washington in Seattle. He joined our core faculty on August 1, 1994

Joseph Trapasso, MD 1993 - He was awarded an oncology fellowship at UCLA with Dr. Jean deKernion and his associates. He then joined the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania as chief of urologic oncology at The Graduate Hospital. In 1999 he was appointed director of urologic oncology at the Morgan Cancer Center of the Lehigh Valley Hospital Medical Center and assistant professor at Pennsylvania State University Medical School.

David Kleinerman, MD 1993 - He was awarded a 3 year oncology fellowship (2 yrs. lab/1 yr. clinical) at the MD Anderson Cancer Institute. He won second prize in the 1995 AUA prize essay contest for laboratory research.

Lawrence Hakim, MD 1994 - He was awarded a fellowship (lab/clinical) in andrology (impotency/infertility) at Boston University. He accepted a full time position at the University of Miami as Chief, Division of Andrology starting July 1, 1995. He is Head of the Section of Sexual Dysfunction, Male Infertility and Prosthetics at the Cleveland Clinic, Florida.

Joseph Borer, MD 1996 - Upon completion of our program he commenced a pediatric urology 2 year fellowship (1 yr. lab/1 yr. clinical) under Alan Retik, MD at Boston Children's Hospital Medical Center (Harvard Medical School). He was also awarded the F.C. Valentine fellowship of the New York Academy of Medicine. On July 1, 1998 he joined the full-time faculty at Harvard Medical School and the staff at Boston Children's Hospital.

Howard Adler, MD 1996 - Upon completion of our program he commenced a 2 year oncology fellowship (1 yr. lab/1 yr. clinical) at Baylor University under Dr. Peter Scardino. On July 1, 1998 he joined the full-time faculty at SUNY - Stony Brook.

Young Kim, MD 1996 - Upon completion of our program he commenced a fellowship in female urology with Dr. Tim Boone at Baylor University. He has accepted a position as director of his subspecialty at Brown University with Dr. Barry Stein and his staff starting July 1, 1997.

Evan Vapnek, MD 1997 - Upon completion of our program he commenced a 2 year transplant and renovascular surgery fellowship (1 yr lab/1 yr clinical) with Andrew Novick at The Cleveland Clinic. He was also awarded an F.C. Valentine fellowship of the New York Academy of Medicine. On July 1, 1999, he accepted a highly desirable position with a large renal transplant group in San Diego.

Scott Zeitlin, MD 1997 - Upon completion of our program he commenced a 2 year andrology fellowship (lab/clinical) with Jacob Rajfer, MD and his colleagues at UCLA. Upon completion of the fellowship, he joined with Dr. Rajfer on the UCLA clinical faculty.

Allen Chernoff, MD 1998 - He has accepted a 2 year fellowship (1 yr. lab/1 yr. clinical) in urologic oncology at the National Cancer Institute with Dr. Marston Linehan and his group. Dr. Chernoff was also an A.F.U.D. scholar. On July 1, 2000 he joined the full time faculty at the University of Illinois.

Michael Volpe, MD 2000 - Upon completion of our program he commenced a fellowship in voiding dysfunction with Steven Kaplan, MD at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and the Cornell Medical School. He then joined our faculty at Downstate.-

Abbey Gershbein, MD 2000 - Upon completion of our program she commenced a fellowship in endo-laparoscopic surgery with Gerhard Fuchs at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Rosalia Misseri, MD 2002 - Upon completion of our program she commenced a pediatric urology fellowship at Indiana University with Dr. Richard Rink and his staff. She was also awarded an F.C. Valentine Fellowship grant by the New York Academy of Medicine.

Chong Min Kim, MD, Ph. D. 2003 - Upon completion of our program, he commenced a 2 year fellowship in urologic oncology at the National Cancer Institute with Dr. Marston Linehan and his staff. He will be an NCI/AFUD fellow as well.

Sovrin Shah, MD, 2003 - Upon completion of our program he commenced a fellowship in female urology with Dr. Shlomo Raz at UCLA.

Jeffrey Donohoe, MD, 2003 - Upon completion of our program he commenced a fellowship in pediatric urology with Dr. John Brock and his staff at Vanderbilt. He was also awarded an F.C. Valentine Fellowship grant by the New York Academy of Medicine.

Nickolas Karanikolas, MD, 2004 - Upon completion of our program he commenced a fellowship in urologic oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

Eliecer Kurzer, MD, 2004 - Upon completion of our program he commenced a fellowship in laparoscopic surgery at the University of Miami.

Steven Maislos, MD, 2004 - He has been awarded a fellowship in laparoscopic surgery and robotics at San Antonio Urology.

Lee Schachter, MD, 2005 - He was awarded a laparoscopy fellowship at Vanderbilt University.

Brent Yanke, MD, 2006 - Upon completion of our program he commenced a fellowship in endo-laparoscopy at Thomas Jefferson University with Demetrius Bagley and Leonard Gomella.

Neil Grafstein , MD, 2006 - Upon completion of our program he commenced a fellowship in female urology and urodynamics at Duke University with George Webster.

Jeffrey Blitstein M.D., 2007 – Upon completion of our program he commenced a fellowship in Laparoscopy at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine with Dr. Gharamian and Dr. Hoenig.

Michael Ferrandino M.D., 2007- Upon completion of our program he commenced a fellowship in Endourology, Laparoscopy and Robotic Surgery at Duke University with Dr. Glenn Preminger and Dr. David Albala.

Maria Ordonez M.D., 2008- Upon completion of our program she commenced a fellowship in Endourology Oncology at Columbia University with Dr. Jaime Landman.

Courtney Lee M.D., 2009- Upon completion of our program she commenced a fellowship in Female Urology at Cleveland Clinic-Glickman Urological and Kidney Institute with Dr. Howard B. Goldman.

Joseph Feliciano, M.D., 2010- Upon completion of our program he commenced a fellowship in Urologic Oncology at New York University-Langone Medical Center with Dr. Samir Taneja.

Ervin Teper, M.D., 2010- Upon completion of our program he commenced a fellowship in Urologic Oncology at FoxChase Cancer Center with Dr. David Y.T. Chen.

Jacob Cohen, M.D., 2010-Upon completion of our program he commenced a fellowship in Endourology and Laparoscopy at St. Vincent's Hospital Manhattan with Dr. Michael Grasso.

Brian Marks, M. D., 2011- Upon completion of our program, he commenced a fellowship in Female Urology at Cleveland Clinic- Glickman Urological and Kidney Institute with Dr. Howard B. Goldman.

Miriam Harel, M.D, 2012 - Upon completion of our program, she commenced a fellowship in Pediatric Urology at University of Connecticut.

John Sfakianos, M.D. 2012 - Upon completion of our program, he commenced a fellowship in urologic oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

Mariam Imnadze, M. D.-2013- Upon completion of our program, she commenced a fellowship in in urologic oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

Alexander Sankin, M.D.-2013-Upon completion of our program, he commenced a fellowship in in urologic oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

Fernando Cabrera-Piquer, M.D. 2013. Upon completion of our program he commenced a fellowship in Endourology, Laparoscopy and Robotic Surgery at Duke University.

Marshall, Stephen, M.D. 2014.  Upon complet6ion of our program he will commence a fellowship in Male Reconstruction Fellowship Training at Washington University.

Winer Andrew, M. D. 2014.  Upon completion of our program, he will commence a fellowship in in Urologic Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
