Subject:         Downstate needs your help.

Over the last few days, we have all experienced the severe weather, starting with extremely cold temperatures and now with the storm underway. Downstate’s physical infrastructure has taken a hard hit. We have seen power outages and burst pipes bursts around the campus.   The staff at FM&D is doing everything we can to keep our patients, staff, students and visitors safe and warm.

Please remember that life safety and patient care come first. We hear your concerns.  The issues affecting you are important to us and we will address them as quickly as we can.

Here’s where we need your help.

  • Check your area, confirm windows are closed and latched.
  • Check areas you are responsible for, low traffic areas get cold too.
  • Report leaks
  • Report heat loss

Our ability to fix facilities’ problems is dependent on our hearing about them.  We rely on the entire Downstate community for that.  Please help us to address problems by informing us of any problems you find.

The Maintenance Operations Center can be reached at (718) 207-1212

We depend on you to help us direct our resources to keep us all safe.

We are grateful for your help, patience and understanding.

Re:  Expected Snow Storm and Campus Operating Status - Thursday, January 4 and Friday, January 5, 2018

The National Weather Service is predicting a major winter storm that will affect this area for Thursday, 1/4/18 and Friday, 1/5/18, with accumulating snow, gusting winds, and difficult travel conditions.

As usual during periods of inclement weather, please monitor "Weather Alerts" on the Downstate homepage for updates.

All Downstate clinical locations will remain open and operate as normal to provide patient care.  All hospital and other essential employees are required to report to work. All academic employees who are deemed essential and who support hospital functions must also report to work.

All Colleges and Schools will be open. However, students should monitor "Weather Alerts" on the website and/or check through PRIME and/or monitor their email for updates.

Students who are participating in a clinical experience should follow the policies of their assigned clinical site.

Most importantly, please be safe and use good judgment as these types of weather events are never to be taken lightly given their unpredictability.

We will provide additional information as the situation evolves.
