The Residents and Fellows Alumni SocietyPRESIDENT'S VISION
Dear Resident Alumni: SUNY Downstate Medical Center is one of the nation’s leading public, urban medical centers. Downstate has contributed to major advances in American medicine and health care. At the same time, as Brooklyn’s only academic medical center, it enhances the borough’s well-being and serves as an engine of economic opportunity for the borough’s residents. Downstate has prepared more than 15,000 graduates for careers as physicians, nurses, allied health professionals, and biomedical researchers. SUNY Downstate has been important in another way. For over 4, 000 physicians, Downstate and its network of affiliated hospitals provided the professional training that prepared them for careers as internists and orthopaedists, surgeons and psychiatrists, pediatricians and pathologists, and many other specialties. As residents, you contributed greatly to the health and well-being of the Brooklyn community. At the same time, you received a unique education by serving a community remarkable in its diversity and notable, sadly, for its need. It is no wonder that so many of you have gone on to make important contributions to medicine. Some graduates are leaders in academic medicine, others in community medicine. Some have conducted important clinical research, while others have been effective advocates on public health issues. Your accomplishments are a source of institutional pride on our campus. We welcome and encourage your active involvement with Downstate. To that end we are planning a number of activities to reestablish links between our campus and residents and fellows alumni, including a newsletter and an annual dinner. I hope you will choose to participate. You can keep up to date on these and other happenings through these web pages. Sincerely, John C. LaRosa, MD |
