He has advanced and developed the Clinical Neurovascular Program and Neurointerventional Endovascular Therapy Program at Downstate, having performed numerous firsts within the city of Brooklyn and/or Downstate including: Acute Stroke Intra-arterial Thrombolysis (including MERCI retriever and Penumbra Stroke System), Brain Aneurysm Therapy (Coil embolization), Brain AVM Therapy (Embolization), Brain Tumor Therapy (Embolization), Carotid and Vertebral Artery Stenting and Cerebrovascular Intracranial Angioplasty and Stenting.
Dr. Mangla’s clinical and research effort is currently focused on advancing diagnosis and therapy of hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke. His research effort has included work on numerous pioneering research projects including numerous institutional and international clinical trials (MERCI trial for acute ischemic stroke, ARUBA trial for Brain AVMS, TEAM trial for unruptured aneurysms) and basic science projects in clinical imaging, neurosciences, and biomedical engineering (currently active National Science Foundation Grant for translational research and Nanoengineering). He is also a dedicated educator, currently developing and creating core curriculums for the Departments of Radiology, Neurosurgery, and Neurology in “Interventional Neuroradiology and Neurovascular Diagnosis and Therapy” and “Academic Research in Radiology”.
Dr. Mangla has authored or co-authored 20 peer-reviewed research publications and has authored or co-authored 7 book chapters and review publications. Dr. Mangla presented over 50 national and international presentations. He is the PI or Co-PI of numerous active IRB Research Protocols and is involved in several patents, including robotic navigation and in the arena of nanotechnology.
