Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics (EPID, BIOS)

Welcome

The mission of the Department is to serve as a source of expertise and training in the application of epidemiological and statistical methods for population-based research, and to promote improvements in population health through collaborations within the Downstate Medical Center and with external stakeholders.

To accomplish its mission, the Department has set the following goals:

  • To develop a graduate program that will provide comprehensive instruction in epidemiological and statistical research methods to public health practitioners and researchers through traditional classroom courses and through interactions with colleagues throughout the Downstate Medical Center on practice and research activities;
  • To serve the community by assisting in the design and implementation of studies of disparities in health and illness in populations surrounding the Downstate Medical Center, and by partnering in scientific interventions to prevent and/or treat diseases that affect community members;
  • To influence public policy and regulatory environments to improve health outcomes, especially in underserved populations;
  • To foster collaborative, cross-disciplinary research that addresses the role of biological, behavioral, socio-economic and environmental factors in the study of urban and immigrant health outcomes.

Sincerely,

Michael Szarek, PhD, MS
Chair and Associate Professor of the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics
