Second Year Course: Psychopathology
Psychopathology Teaching MSII Year
During the neuroscience block which completes the second year of medical student education, psychopathology consists of 22 hours divided into 10 hours of lecture and 12 hours of small group conferences. The lectures are supplemented by handouts and suggested readings. The lecturers are, for the most part, given by the most senior members of the department. The small group conferences contain no more than 9 students per conference, and last 2 hours, the topics of psychosis, mood disorder, and anxiety disorder are discussed in depth. Each 2 hour small group sessions is preceded by a 1 hour introductory lecture. Students are provided with a case for each of the 3 topics as well as a series of study questions. During the conference, utilizing a modified CBL format, students review the case in depth as a means of expanding their information base and understanding of each the 3 topics.
The job of the small group leaders is to facilitate the discussion.
