INTRODUCTION TO THE FIRST YEAR PROGRAM
The department participates in the teaching of medical statistics and epidemiology in the Essentials of Clinical Medicine block. This consists of lectures and case-based learning exercises (CBLs).

INTRODUCTION TO THE SECOND YEAR PROGRAM

The required Second Year program in Preventive Medicine and Community Health consists of several lectures aimed at conveying an understanding of the theory and practice of epidemiology as applied to the prevention and control of selected infectious and chronic disease and other health problems. These lectures are spaced throughout the various teaching blocks and the Essentials of Clinical Medicine II (ECM) course.

Concurrent MD and MPH Degrees
Students enrolled in other graduate degree programs (e.g., MD, PA, Master of Nursing) may concurrently enroll in the Master of Public Health Program. For further details, see the Master of Public Health Program web site.

Preventive Medicine Elective Courses
Elective courses in Preventive Medicine and Community Health are highly individualized and may require 2-3 months of advance planning. For all electives listed here, students are required to contact the Course Director well in advance of registration.

PREV 4539 Urban Health
The patient population that medical students at SUNY Downstate encounter in their clinical years is a multi-ethnic mix that comes predominantly poor, inner city neighborhoods and that includes many immigrant groups. This population is one to which many students have had no previous exposure. It is also a population whose patterns of morbidity and mortality are heavily influenced by economics, cultural and social factors, such as poor housing, language barriers, and lack of access to primary care. An understanding of these factors is essential to delivering appropriate health care to this population.

PREV 4548 Clinical Introduction to HIV Disease
Emphasis is on a family-centered, comprehensive, primary care approach to the disease. Students will participate in the Special Treatment and Research (STAR) Clinic interdisciplinary conference, interview HIV outpatients, and meet as a seminar. The seminar will address epidemiological, medical, nutritional, psychological, and social aspects of this family disease. Students will be assigned a project of their choice.

PREV 4540 Health Care in Developing Countries

PREV 4541 Occupational Medicine
A practical clinical experience with the medical department of a large organization to help students appraise their interest in entering the specialty on a full- or part-time basis; to familiarize them with the common illnesses of working adults, to introduce them to the special clinical practices developed by industrial physicians (work classification, disability evaluation, periodic examination, etc.), some of which have applicability to the to the health supervision of adults generally. Students must personally meet with the course director about this elective prior to applying.

PREV 4542 Clinical Outcomes Research
Supervised participation in clinical outcomes research at the peer review organization. Students work with physician epidemiologists, biostatisticians and data analysts on specific projects utilizing statewide data bases. In the past students have participated in projects such as the management of congestive heart failure, deep vein thrombosis, the use of prophylactic antibiotics in selected surgical procedures, and cardiac catheterization. Advanced planning of 2-3 months is required for this elective.

PREV 4543 Research in Preventive Medicine
An opportunity for participation in departmental research in progress or, if feasible, work on a problem of the student's choice. Students must personally meet with the course director prior to applying for this elective. Advance planning is required for this elective.


PREV 4544 Advanced Quality assessment and Utilization Review
Seminars and readings on the purpose and goals of quality assessment and utilization programs. Topics include: quality standards for patient care, cost containment, the existing administrative structures and functions of review bodies. Students are required to prepare an analytical paper on a relevant topic. This course is arranged individually to suit interests and needs of the student. Advance planning of 2-3 months is necessary in order to prepare for on-site or off-site placement.

PREV 4545 Advanced Medical Care Review Program
An experience in the development, description, or modification of a specific hospital medical care policy or procedure. The activity may involve gathering and reviewing information, data and opinions on some aspect of a health program. It may involve planning, program operation or evaluation. It may focus on utilization, effectiveness, staffing, etc. This is intended to be a practical introduction to the steps of thinking and working through the resolution of an organizational problem within the context and guidelines of appropriate professional procedure, including confidentiality. The area can be described as the administrative side of clinical practice. This course is arranged individually to suit the interests and needs of the student. Advance planning of 2-3 months is necessary in order to prepare for on-site or off-site placement.

PREV 4546 Advanced Epidemiology and Medical Care
Students are introduced to research methodology using real data on cancer epidemiology or other topics. Students establish a hypothesis and analyze their data to test that hypothesis. Students gain some familiarity with microcomputers and use of common statistical packages. The objective is to provide the student with some research experience in working with real data for large numbers of subjects.
