Residency Training Program in General Pediatrics

The Residency Training Program of the Children's Medical Center of Brooklyn, a program of the College of Medicine of the State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn (SUNY, Brooklyn) is fully accredited by the ACGME. The program integrates three hospitals: its own university hospital, a large renowned municipal hospital, and a private, nonprofit voluntary hospital. The important elements of this training program include the richness and variety of the patient population, the academic strength of the clinical faculty, and the dedication of that faculty to the educational program of the residents. The Chilren's Hospital at Downstate at the University Hospital of Brooklyn (UHB) is a referral center for a broad range of pediatric subspecialty services and is designated as a Regional Perinatal Center. It also provides general pediatric care to the community of middle class patients in the East Flatbush area. Kings County Hospital Center (KCHC) acts as the primary care facility for roughly 2O% of the borough of Brooklyn, a city of 2.6 million inhabitants within the City of New York. In addition, KCHC is one of a three Level I trauma centers in Brooklyn, receives acute care referrals from all of the other Brooklyn institutions. KCHC also serves as an international referral center for families who have connections with immigrant groups in Brooklyn, such as Caribbean Islanders. Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH), with a comprehensive pediatric faculty supplemented by many private pediatric practitioners, serves a middle class community on suburban-like Staten Island. SIUH is also the site of one of New York City's two major burn units. Our residents' training is further enriched by experiences at our affiliates in Manhattan, Lenox Hill Hospital and the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

The pediatric residency program at the State University of New York Children's Medical Center of Brooklyn has 92 pediatric residents, 19 Medicine/Pediatrics residents, 6 chief residents, and 14 subspecialty residents. The Children's Hospital at Downstate and the pediatric services of Kings County Hospital Center (KCHC) plus Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH) constitute our integrated facilities, and there are training affiliations with the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan. Our pediatric residents staff each pediatric unit at all facilities. The institutions together have over 260 pediatric beds and bassinets for over 7600 pediatric medicine admissions per year and approximately 9000 newborn deliveries with over 1000 NICU admissions. Between the three major integrated sites, there are over 200,000 pediatric outpatient visits annually (70,147 emergency and acute care, nearly 20,000 resident continuity practice, over 70,000 various subspecialty clinic visits, and over 40,000 additional general pediatric visits) and over 110 attending physicians on active staff. The academic year consists of twelve one-month rotations. The program is in full compliance with the New York State Health Code Section 405 and ACGME work hour limitation regulations. The training stipend is highly competitive and the benefits package is very comprehensive. In addition, the department provides a generous house staff social activities fund used for the purchase of show tickets, sporting event tickets, day trips, parties and other events.

Many of the subspecialties accredited by the ACGME are represented in the Department with subspecialty training programs. The faculty, therefore, displays considerable depth with respect to expertise. As a state supported teaching center, our faculty is deeply concerned with their role as educators and place a high priority on the teaching of residents and students. In light of this, most of our academic and clinical faculty is present on-campus on a full time basis. Particular attention is given to the humanistic, social, and ethical aspects of the practice of pediatrics, as well as the acquisition of academic knowledge and response to the intellectual challenges of pediatrics. Giving our undergraduate and postgraduate students a quality pediatric education while they deliver the highest level of medical care to their patients is our primary obligation. The faculty members take pride in their didactic responsibilities, and they enjoy an informal, open door, inquisitive atmosphere.
