Neuropathology Training ProgramProgram: SUNY Downstate’s fully accredited program ( five year accreditation by ACGME in 2007) offers an exciting opportunity for those interested in a rich training experience in neuropathology. The department is chaired by neuropathologist Suzanne S. Mirra MD, The training program has a faculty of three additional neuropathologists as well as a molecular pathologist and several neuroscientists based at the College of Medicine and our two major teaching affiliates, University Hospital of Brooklyn and Kings County Medical Center. Neuropathology training under Program Director, Chandrakant Rao, MD, provides exposure to a wide array of material that is further enhanced by specialty rotations. These include rotations in ophthalmic pathology at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, in neuromuscular pathology at Columbia University Medical Center, in forensic neuropathology in the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of New York City, and in community neuropathology at Staten Island University Hospital. Trainees have many opportunities to conduct research. Downstate is recognized as an international center for basic and clinical investigation on hippocampal function and pathophysiology with implications for epilepsy and memory disturbance. Within the department, trainees may work with faculty members on research projects related to Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases, synaptic function, neurogenesis, and basic mechanisms of memory formation. Requirements: Board-eligibility or certification in Anatomic Pathology preferred. A minimum of one year of Anatomic Pathology is required.
