CYTOGENETICS

Goals and Objectives

Cytogenetics training occurs at the Wyckoff Hospital under the direction of Dr. Babu. The rotation is for a period of two weeks and offers the resident the opportunity to evaluate cytogenetics cases using the state of the art techniques and to write interpretive reports based on the findings. During the rotation the resident should be able to demonstrate knowledge of cytogenetics and the cytogenetics laboratory by satisfactory participation in daily activities. In addition, the resident should demonstrate diagnostic competence with the diagnosis of abnormal karyotypes based on cytogenetics studies and related clinical history, and satisfactorily discuss daily assigned cytogenetics topics according to a list provided by the Cytogenetics laboratory staff.

During training in cytogenetics, the resident should be able to do the following according to each of the six ACGME competencies:

PATIENT CARE
Collect history and other laboratory findings on patients referred from UHB and KCHC
Interpret cytogenetics results based upon history, physical findings, and laboratory test results.

MEDICAL KNOWLEDGE
Demonstrate knowledge of routine clinical cytogenetics techniques and procedures.
Understand and explain chromosome and karyotypes nomenclature.

PRACTICE-BASED LEARNING AND IMPROVEMENT
Utilize current scientific literature to determine significance of a chromosomal abnormality.
Illustrate knowledge of local computer systems.

INTERPERSONAL AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Communicate to cytogenetics laboratory staff and physicians results from cytogenetics laboratory.
Discuss daily assigned cytogenetics topics.

PROFESSIONALISM
Complete required assignments in a timely and appropriate manner.
Is prompt and well prepared during rotation

SYSTEMS BASED PRACTICE
Understand regulatory requirements for a cytogenetics laboratory.
Explain reimbursement issues for cytogenetics testing.
Grasp prenatal and perinatal cytogenetic issues.
