Department of Otolaryngology - Faculty

Joseph McPhee

Joseph McPhee, PhD

Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology

Dr. McPhee, Assistant Professor, received his baccalaureate in Zoology, with a minor in Chemistry from Columbia College. He subsequently received a doctorate in Developmental Biology from NYU. The title of his thesis was “Glycosaminoglycan Production and Otic Capsule Chondrogenesis in the Mammalian Embryonic Inner Ear”. Following the receipt of his doctorate, Dr. McPhee became an Associate in Research in the Department of Otolaryngology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where he continued to study the biochemistry of the inner ear, with particular interest in the molecular biology of otosclerosis. At the same time, he pursued an academic career in Biology at the City University of New York. In 1989, Dr. McPhee was asked to serve as a research consultant to the Otolaryngology Resident Training Program at the SUNY Downstate. This subsequently led to his current full time appointment as Director of Research in the Department of Otolaryngology and Research Assistant Professor at the SUNY-HSCB. In 1995, through funding from the American Otological Society and SUNY-HSCB, Dr. McPhee established the otolaryngology research facility at SUNY-HSCB in order to pursue a number of areas of interest in otolaryngology. These include the use of high frequency distortion product otoacoustic emissions as a means of detecting early-stage ototoxicity, the role of growth factors in oncogenesis and transcranial magnetic stimulation of the facial nerve. Most recently he has been studying the underlying genetic basis of otosclerosis and the role of growth factors in stimulating collagen remodeling in dermis.
