Education

Overview of Clinical Education and Rotations

The program provides a well-balanced, in-depth clinical exposure, utilizing rotations at five affiliated institutions. In addition, residents participate in 3 hours of didactic lectures weekly from in-house as well as visiting faculty and residents. The lectures are hands-on and interactive so that residents can utilize their time most effectively.

Following is an example of a typical three-year rotation, although it will vary somewhat from resident to resident. Participating institutions:

Sports Coverage

The faculty within the Division of Sports Medicine of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation Medicine serves as the primary team physicians for the Public School Athletic League (PSAL) of Brooklyn and Queens. The physicians, along with residents, provide game coverage and pre-participation evaluation for high school athletes involved in all sports. Our sports medicine doctors serve as team physicians for the New York Aviators, a professional hockey team in Brooklyn, and the New York Sharks, a professional women's' football team, and provide medical services to many mass sporting events throughout New York City. The department also serves as team physicians for SUNY Maritime, a Division III school, providing coverage for hockey and football. The residents of the PM&R program at SUNY Downstate have ample opportunity to be involved in event and training room coverage for a variety of sporting events. Residents are able to learn acute sports medicine care and follow athletes throughout their rehabilitation of sports injuries by working side by side with physicians who are board-certified in Sports Medicine.

Additional Benefits for Downstate Residents

Being a resident at Downstate has quite a few perks! In addition to over $1000.00 in books received at the inception of residency training (Braddom, Cucurillo and more!), residents are reimbursed up to $225 for Smart Phones or PDAs. The program also covers the costs for residents to attend national and international conferences and board review courses. The department also pays for membership in some of the major professional organizations of PM&R such as the Association of Academic Physiatrists, the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and the New York Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Membership in these organizations comes with benefits such as journal subscriptions and educational resources.
