Overview Block
Objectives
- To review
and integrate subject material learnt in MS1.
- To analyze
all aspects of a complicated case.
Organization
The Overview Block is a
two-day exercise. The students, working in groups of about ten, are
given a long and difficult case, with a set of leading questions to explain,
organized into ten topics, which they spend the first day doing. At
the end of the first day they are given a twenty-page analysis of the case.
Each student is assigned one issue. The next day each group discusses the
case in more detail and each student is assigned a topic on which to write
a 250 word essay (different from the issue assigned the prior day). This
is not a CBL because the objective is not to learn anything new, but rather
to use what has been learned in the first year to understand a complicated
case that cuts across organ systems. The exercise and essay writing
is entirely open book.
