Emerging Concepts in Medicine

The goal of this course is to expose fourth-year medical students to selected areas of medicine; how these fields are evolving and their anticipated impact on the practice of medicine in the future.

Content areas:

  • Pharmacogenomics. Implications for drug use and development.
  • Human Genome Project, its application to Huntington’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Signal Transduction related to carcinogenesis.
  • Role of translational research in the future development of medicine.
  • The role of Clinical Studies in drug development.
  • The contribution of genomics to the understanding of disease processes.
  • Implications of translational research to the therapetics of obesity.
  • The role of new imaging modalities in the analysis of behavior and cognition.
