Emerging Concepts in Medicine

The goal of this course is to expose fourth-year medical students to selected areas of medicine; how these fields are evolving and their anticipated impact on the practice of medicine in the future.

Content areas:

Pharmacogenomics. Implications for drug use and development.
Human Genome Project, its application to Huntington’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease.
Signal Transduction related to carcinogenesis.
Role of translational research in the future development of medicine.
The role of Clinical Studies in drug development.
The contribution of genomics to the understanding of disease processes.
Implications of translational research to the therapetics of obesity.
The role of new imaging modalities in the analysis of behavior and cognition.
