Block 6: Respiratory System

  1. To understand the anatomical and histological features of the the lungs. To learn the structures of and functions of the airway, the intercostal, phrenic and vagus nerves as well as the components of the autonomic nerves in relationship to the lungs. To understand the neural control of respiration

  2. To understand the development of the respiratory system. To learn the radiological anatomy of intrathoracic structures of the respiratory system using normal and abnormal chest radiographs.

  3. To understand the mechanisms of inspiration and expiration, pulmonary gas exchange and concepts of dead space, alveolar ventilation and ventilation-perfusion ratio. Classification of pulmonary diseases is also included as an issue of learning.
