First-Year Medicine

Block 4: Blood/Lymphoid/Head & Neck

The course currently has two major objectives:

  1. To learn the histology and the biochemistry of hematopoiesis and of the lymphoid system.

Histology topics include a discussion blood composition, of red cell, white cell and platelet production, a study of lymphoid tissues and organs, and a basic introduction to immunological principles.

The biochemistry topics include hemoglobin structure and function, basic enzyme kinetics, serine proteases and blood coagulation.

The biochemistry and histology topics complement each other well, and the two CBL cases have been designed to reinforce this material.

  2. To learn the anatomy of the head and neck.

This part of the curriculum is primarily conducted in the laboratory, but there are a number of lectures that complement the laboratories. There are also weekly laboratory review summary lectures.

In addition, there are two lectures on the developmental anatomy of the head and neck, which would be classified as embryology.
