College of Nursing - Undergraduate Program

The RN to BS Program

This is a 65- credit upper division program in which registered nurses complete requirements for the baccalaureate degree with therapeutic communication; clinical teaching; community health; and leadership and management. Clinical experiences are arranged in a variety of community settings. In addition, numerous opportunities are provided for students to apply nursing and other theories to their current clinical practice and to further their development as professional nurses.

In a typical entering class, 100 registered nurse students are admitted in the Fall Semester. The student retention rate is 95 percent. The program is offered on a semester basis with three semesters of concentrated study comprising the usual pattern.

Flexible scheduling permits study, for the most part, one day per week, day and evening; or on two days a week, either daytime (usually between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.) or evening(usually between the hours of 4:45 and 9:00 p.m.) Each semester is 16 weeks in length.\0xA0

Course Exemptions by Examination and Electives

Based on their credentials as registered nurses, students can gain credit by examination in eight nursing courses (27 credits). This is achieved through passing the National League for nursing Mobility Profile II Examinations. These exams are administered to enrolled students several times throughout the year and must be passed prior to registration for senior-level courses. A required credit-by-examination fee plus the cost for the exam booklets will be charged. Students who have taken these exams elsewhere prior to admission should arrange to have the scores sent directly to the College of Nursing, Box22, Office of Academic Programming. Students who pass these exams then need 38 upper-divison credits to complete degree requirements.

The 65-credit upper division program includes a requirement for seven credits of electives. Four credits of electives may be taken at the SUNY-Downstate or at another accredited college or university prior to admission. Three credits of elective must be either an independent or guided study in nursing, or a nursing elective taken at SUNY-Downstate.
