Chairman Of Radiology Appointed
SUNY Downstate Medical Center has appointed Salvatore J.A. Sclafani, M.D. as Chairman of Diagnostic Radiology.
Dr. Sclafani has served as interim chairman of the department since 2003. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Fordham University and earned his doctorate in Medicine at SUNY Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse. Dr. Sclafani completed a Radiology residency at SUNY Downstate where he has remained on the faculty since 1976. Dr. Sclafani is currently Professor of Radiology, Emergency Medicine, and Surgery at Downstate.
“I am very happy with this promotion and humbled by its responsibility,” Dr. Sclafani said. “It is my intention to improve the quality of Radiology throughout the borough by providing continuing education to its current radiologists, by recruiting to Brooklyn quality radiologists and scientists and by training the radiology residents who will be the Borough's radiologists for the next fifty years.”
Dr. Sclafani is an internationally recognized expert in interventional radiology and trauma care. He is a Fellow of the Society of Interventional Radiology and a diplomate of the American College of Radiology, with a certificate of added qualifications in Interventional Radiology. He has published more than 150 papers in scientific journals and authored or co-authored more than 20 textbooks.
“Spending my entire career in Brooklyn has benefited me professionally and personally. My mission during this phase of my career is to give back to my hometown,” Dr. Sclafani said. SUNY Downstate Medical Center is the only academic medical center in Brooklyn, serving more than 2 million people within the borough. SUNY Downstate is located at 450 Clarkson Avenue.
