Research
There are numerous and far-reaching neurology-related research opportunities at SUNY Downstate. Particular strengths of the Center include the Nobel Prize-winning work on nitric oxide by Dr. Robert Furchgott and advances in our understanding of the mechanisms of the epilepsies and Alzheimer's disease. The Department of Neurology has close ties to many other departments and has a tradition of fruitful collaboration. Many members of other departments, including the chairs of the Department of Pathology and the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, hold joint appointments in the Neurology Department. The dean of the graduate school holds her faculty appointment in the Department of Neurology. In addition, many of our affiliated institutions support active clinical research.
