Welcome Message from the President
Downstate is undertaking a comprehensive Self-Study as part of its upcoming accreditation visit from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
This is an important accreditation for SUNY Downstate: Universities that are recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as being eligible for Title IV funding (financial aid for students) must be accredited by one of the nation's regional accrediting agencies.
Middle States asks institutions to closely assess themselves through the lens of 14 Standards of Excellence. As part of our Self Study, we at Downstate will closely examine our academic mission and how well we are doing in terms of continuous quality improvement and institutional renewal throughout all of our colleges and schools.
I have appointed Dr. JoAnn Bradley, senior vice president for philanthropy and vice president for academic affairs, and Dr. Jeffrey Putman, vice president for student affairs and dean of students, as Co-Chairs of the Middle States Self-Study, and Dr. Teresa Smith, clinical assistant professor of emergency medicine, as Deputy Co-Chair.
This is an opportunity for us to tell our story. I trust that as we move forward with the Self-Study, that the campus will strongly support this important project.
Very truly yours,
John F. Williams, MD, EdD, MPH, FCCM
