STAR MENTAL HEALTH & PSYCHOSOCIAL SUPPORT
The STAR Mental Health Program, integrated into STAR Health Center (SHC) primary care services, offers full psychosocial assessment, diagnostic evaluation and treatment planning, crisis intervention, ongoing psychotherapy, and substance abuse counseling. Multiple support groups are offered for adults infected and affected by HIV. Groups focus on a variety of topics such as disclosure, gender specific issues, harm reduction and recovery. The program is staffed by a psychiatrist, social workers and substance use counselors. It offers referrals for additional services which are not on-site, such as day treatment, inpatient detoxification, methadone maintenance, alcohol day treatment and acupuncture. The program is funded by Ryan White Part B (formerly Title II) through the NYS Department of Health AIDS Institute and by Ryan White Part A (formerly Title I) through MHRA.
SUPPORTIVE COUNSELING SERVICES OF SUNY (SCSS)
The Supportive Counseling Services of SUNY (SCSS), formerly Brooklyn Group Support Project (BGSP), was founded in 1990. SCSS provides long-term HIV support groups and Individual/Family/Couples counseling. Groups are held at SUNY Downstate Medical Center and Kings County Hospital Center (KCHC). The services are free. Clients can call the program directly to enroll. Refreshments and Metro Cards are provided.
