Positive Steps Program

POSITIVE STEPS PROGRAM

The Positive STEPS Program is part of a multi-site project to adapt and implement IDSA/CDC recommendations on prevention of HIV transmission in seropositive individuals. The program is being implemented in the STAR Health Center and will incorporate: 1) screening for risky behaviors and STDs; 2) brief provider-issued prevention messages to reduce risky behaviors; 3) tailored risk reduction counseling to reduce risky behaviors for certain patients; 4) referral of patients with sex and needle-sharing partners to health departments for partner notification and testing; and 5) referrals for social services, mental health and drug abuse treatment. This project will collect process monitoring and outcome evaluation data on how well implementations of these recommendations are reducing risky behaviors. The project is funded by the Centers for Disease Control.
