The School of Graduate Studies

Letter from the Dean

Dear Graduate School Applicant:

The School of Graduate Studies of the State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn welcomes your application to our Ph.D. and M.D./Ph.D. programs in biomedical science. Our school is dedicated to excellence in research and teaching and strives to provide a stimulating collegial learning environment. The basic science faculty and the clinical scientists involved in the education and training of our graduate students are funded investigators, recognized nationally and internationally for their innovative research.

  • In 1998, Dr. Robert Furchgott, one of our distinguished faculty won the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his research on nitric oxide conducted while he was chairman of our Pharmacology Department. He developed his theories from his 6th floor lab at the SUNY Health Science Center at Brooklyn and announced from here that endothelium derived relaxing factor (EDRF) was in fact the tiny molecule nitric oxide (NO).
  • Dr. Raymond Damadian developed the scanning MRI at the Health Science Center. He did his work with the assistance of eight graduate students over the years, and the first scanning MRI, which was built here, is now on display in the Smithsonian Institute.
  • In 1999, Gregory Quirk, MD/Ph.D., class of 1990, was one of 12 recipients of the Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers. The Presidential Award is the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government on outstanding scientists beginning their research careers. Dr. Quirk's researchinvolves electrophysiological recording from single nerve cells in behaving rats, a technique he perfected in the hippocampus for his Ph.D. thesis here.

Laboratory facilities are excellent and include for example, institutional core facilities for DNA synthesis and purification, peptide analysis, cell imaging, electronmicroscopy and a computer center.

The School of Graduate Studies is an integral part of a large urban health science center. It comprises a diverse cultural community and provides academic support and enrichment. We are located in Brooklyn, primarily a residential borough in New York City. The Health Science Center at Brooklyn is a 20 minute train ride from all the cultural advantages of our great metropolis: museums, theater, concerts, sporting events and restaurants serving a variety of ethnic cuisines.

Choosing a graduate school is one of the most important and difficult career decisions that you will make in life. It will influence your field of research concentration and your selection of a mentor. The SUNY Health Science Center at Brooklyn School of Graduate Studies looks forward to receiving your credentials and helping you make that important decision. The deadline for applications is February 1, but we will review exceptional applications throughout the year. Most students are accepted for the Fall semester.

With best regards and wishes for success at this academic milestone.

Sincerely,
Susan Schwartz-Giblin, Ph.D.
Dean
