Speakers: Herb Niemirow (Elsevier), Virginia Hughes (National Geographic Magazine), Nicole Sabaliauskas (Health Science Communications), Padma Maruvada (National institutes of Health), Tracey Wheeler (Defense Advanced Research projects Agency), David Gordon (Bristol-Myers Squibb), Deborah Walder (CUNY Brooklyn), Janice Baranowski (Brooklyn Technical High School), Paula van de Nes (Ogilvy & Mather)

Description: The New York Academy of Sciences, Nature, and the Washington Post have reported a significant decline in postdoctoral students achieving tenure-track appointments. Increasingly, doctoral and postdoctoral students are seeking careers outside of academia and research. However, the majority of graduates are unaware of how to make a successful transition into these careers. Hence, we at the Graduate School at SUNY Downstate Medical Center are hosting an interactive Science Career Day at our campus.

This full day event will include a series of panels and guest speakers ranging from academia to advertising and from careers in the public sector to those in the private sector. As a participant you will become aware of skills needed for various science-related careers and come to appreciate your skills and the limitations of these skills. You will also have opportunities to network with the speakers whom are potential role models in your career of choice.
