The Department of Medicine at SUNY-Downstate offers a 3-year combined subspecialty Fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine (notwithstanding the 2 separate ACGME listings), the only university-based training program in this field in the boroughs of Brooklyn, Staten Island and New York City. The institution has a long history of excellence in clinical education, providing its trainees an exposure to the full gamut of relevant diseases in an urban population of great ethnic and cultural diversity. The majority of the training takes place in public hospitals, where fellows encounter a wide range of disease severity and socioeconomic
conditions. Fellows are closely supervised by full-time faculty members at each site, but they are allowed a reasonable amount of autonomy to develop their clinical management and procedural skills. The Fellowship is clinically oriented throughout its three years, but all trainees are expected to demonstrate an ongoing commitment to scholarship and to engage productively in one or more academic projects.

Trainees spend the first two years as fellows in Pulmonary Medicine, with the third year devoted to Critical Care Medicine. Substantial ICU experience is integrated into the first two years, which lead to ABIM subspecialty board eligibility in Pulmonary Medicine. Completion of the third year confers additional board eligibility in Critical Care Medicine. Currently, the program accepts 4 candidates each year through the NRMP match.

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at SUNY Downstate is affiliated with the Kings County Hospital Center, Long Island College Hospital, Veterans Administration Hospital, and the Brookdale Medical Center.

Because of the size and diversity of the population at these hospitals we can offer a comprehensive training program with a broad exposure to all types of diseases of the musculoskeletal system.

A complete five year program affiliated with the National Interns and Residents Matching Plan (NRMP) Orthopaedic Residency Training is presently divided into sixteen months of surgery and allied specialties including experience in primary trauma, pediatric surgery, vascular surgery, emergency and intensive care and transplant and forty six months of Orthopaedic surgery with subspecialties.

Staff physicians with advanced training and skills in hand and microvascular surgery, reconstructive surgery, arthroscopic surgery, spine surgery, pediatric Orthopaedic, foot and ankle surgery as well as orthopaedic oncology and sports medicine are available. A close working relationship has been established with an active and sizable rheumatology group.

Educational conferences on fractures, anatomy, biomechanics and journal clubs are conducted during the academic year. A close working research relationship exists with the Cooper-Union School of engineering in Manhattan. During residency training a clinical or laboratory research project must be completed.

The Rehabilitation Medicine Residency Program at SUNY Downstate, Kings County Hospital Center, Long Island College Hospital, St. Johns Episcopal Hospital, and Staten Island University Hospital offers a three year residency training program fully accredited by ACGME and the RRC.

This training program is designed in such a manner as to afford the residents the opportunity of learning the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation by didactic and clinical teaching, and by giving them increasing clinical responsibilities under the direction and supervision of qualified faculty members who are all board certified in this specialty.

The areas to which the residents are assigned include: Acute Comprehensive in-patient Rehabilitation; A broad spectrum of out-patient rehabilitation services including follow up clinics, amputee, brace and wheelchair, spinal cord injury, arthritis, neuromuscular, sports medicine, spine/scoliosis, pain management, hand/trauma and spina bifida clinics; In-patient and Out-patient consultation services, and electrodiagnostic laboratory.

1. First year residents are assigned Inpatient Services, Consult service or Outpatient clinics they also attend didactic teaching activities and other rehabilitation clinics.

2. Second year residents are assigned to the Consultation service, EMG Lab, Multi-specialty Clinics, and Out-patient services.

3. Third year residents' assignments include In-patient, Out-patient, and Consultation and EMG services.

All residents are required to attend weekly Journal Clubs, Grand Rounds, lectures, and resident self education programs. Upon completion of the residency program the PM&R resident is boards eligible and prepared to practice in all rehabilitation environments.
