Louise McCarthy has been Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and Program Administrator of the P.S. 13 School Based Health Center in Brooklyn since she set up these clinical services in 1985 under the auspices of the Department of Family Medicine and the New York State Department of Health. Additionally, in 1991, Ms. McCarthy was appointed to the faculty of the Department of Family Medicine with the title of Clinical Instructor.

Ms. McCarthy earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing in 1975 from SUNY Downstate Medical Center. From 1981 to 1983, she attended Columbia University, earning a Master of Science degree in Nursing with a major in Pediatric Primary Care Nursing. Ms. McCarthy is certified and licensed in New York State as both a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and School Nurse Practitioner. Through the P.S. 13 School Based Health Center, jointly sponsored by the Department of Family Medicine and the Research Foundation of Brooklyn, she continues to spearhead the provision of vitally important health care services for elementary school children in the East New York section of Brooklyn.
