The Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at SUNY Downstate cares for over 50,000 visits below the age of 19 years between Kings County Hospital and University Hospital of Brooklyn. At Kings County, the pediatric ED has 12 beds, of which 6 are monitored, plus a large asthma room and a trauma/ recuscitation bay. At University Hospital of Brooklyn, the pediatric area has a total of 5 beds, 4 of which are monitored and an asthma area. With the support of a full compliment of pediatric medical and surgical subspecialties, we provide excellent care for the children of Brooklyn.
The high volume of patients combined with the diverse spectrum of disease, provides an ideal environment for resident and medical student training, as well as a fine arena for conducting clinical research. Residents from the Departments of Emergency Medicine, Pediatrics, Family Practice, Physician Assistant Students and Medical Students rotate through the emergency department and our faculty are involved in their education both in and out of the clinical area.
Kings County Hospital Center has the distinction of being a Comprehensive Evaluation and Treatment of Child Abuse and Neglect (CETCAN) facility and a level one trauma center. The goal of CETCAN is to strengthen the response of the medical team in identifying signs and symptoms of child abuse and/or neglect and provide appropriate management, treatment and referral.
