UHB Recognizes Employees of the Month
University Hospital of Brooklyn's Employee of the Month Award recognizes superior performance, dedication, and the ability to work as a member of the team, among many other accomplishments that contribute to service excellence.

Suzan Young TH Staff Assistant 1 Nursing Administration
Suzan Young was born in Belize and migrated to Brooklyn at the age of 10. She received a bachelor's degree in business administration from Johnson & Wales University in Providence, RI.
Suzan joined the SUNY Downstate family as a staff assistant and has been providing direct support to the nursing directors/senior associate administrators for the Nursing Administration Department. This involves coordinating daily office administrative functions and updating the policies and procedures manuals for the Department of Nursing.
"My goals are to grow and learn within the health care field," says Suzan. "SUNY Downstate is a place where I look forward to coming to work every day. We have a fantastic leadership team in place that fully supports all associates. I feel blessed to be working with such great staff that makes my job fun and exciting every day."
Suzan plays an important role in promoting and perfecting a positive image for UHB and the Department of Nursing. She continues to set high standards in nursing administration and demonstrates excellence.
George Ren CTS Anesthesia Specialist Department of Anesthesiology
George Ren was born in China and came to the United States in 1983. He received a master's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Texas at El Paso.
In 1989, George started his career at SUNY Downstate as a senior biomedical engineer in the Scientific and Medical Instrumentation Center (SMIC). He transferred to the Department of Anesthesiology as an anesthesia specialist in 1999, taking care of all the needs and technical aspects in the operating room and wherever location anesthesia is provided.
His nominator, Dennis Dimaculangan, MD, says, "George adheres to UHB values, treating everyone—but most especially patients—with respect, compassion, dignity, and fairness. He does his work regardless of times and weather constraints. He makes sure all equipment is in order and safe. George works well with superiors, colleagues, and those working under him. He respects racial and ethnic diversity, cultural competency, and cultural ethnicity."
José Antonio Nieves Hospital Attendant 1 Radiology Department
José Nieves was born and raised in East Harlem. The youngest of four, José and his siblings grew up in the church.
Troubled with a learning disability, José struggled through school. Despite his disability, he always gave 100 percent to every task at hand. He was recognized in high school for having perfect attendance every year.
José began working at SUNY Downstate in 2006 and quickly developed a good work ethic. "I love what I do and I take pride in my work," he says.
Oliver Jardine, his nominator, says "José's commitment to our department and this institution as a whole never waivers. Always punctual, willing, polite and helpful, he provides a breath of fresh air. Ever pleasant, no task is too small or large. He smiles, then immediately jumps to any task."
