Residency Program

The Department of Dermatology offers a three-year residency program fulfilling the training requirements of the American Board of Dermatology.

Approximately 5 residents are trained per year. During the three years of training, residents are assigned to both in-patient and out-patient services at University Hospital, Kings County Hospital Center, the New York Harbor Health Care System (formerly known as the Brooklyn Veteran’s Administration Medical Center), Brookdale Hospital Medical Center, and Long Island College Hospital.

The teaching program includes formal lectures in the basic sciences, medical and surgical dermatology, dermatopathology, journal clubs, and guest lectures. Training includes phototherapy, laser surgery cosmetic dermatology, pediatric dermatology, and participation in a busy consultation service.

There are numerous opportunities for resident participation in basic and clinical research, and include the following ongoing basic-science research:

  • in vitro assays to study the effects of various compounds on leukocyte cell functions as chemotaxis and leukocyte-endothelial cell adhesion;
  • comparative studies of nitric oxide production by murine macrophage/human monocyte (THP-1) and human dermal microvascular endothelial cell lines;
  • tests of various compounds for their ability to inhibit LPS-induced and/or cytokine-induced NO production;
  • quantitative assessment of PMN chemotactic responses measured by CytoFluor, and the comparative influence of phosphodiesterase inhibitors on PMN from blood samples from healthy and atopic patients;
  • phase I, II, and III clinical trials to compare the safety and efficacy of various acne treatments;
  • examination of the safety and efficacy of topical wound-healing peptides, including in vitro and in vivo assays.

Thank you for your interest. The members of the Department look forward to reviewing your application.

Sincerely,

Alan R. Shalita, M.D.
