ACGME-accredited SUNY Downstate / Ackerman Academy Fellowship in Dermatopathology at the Ackerman Academy in New York City
The mission of our fellowship in dermatopathology is to prepare and train future dermatopathologists to be leaders in the field. Under the guidance of Dr. Geoffrey Gottlieb and Dr. Edward Heilman, this one-year ACGME accredited fellowship program exposes trainees to all aspects of dermatopathology—from routine cases to challenging consultations. The Ackerman Academy receives over 100,000 accessions and more than 4000 consultations annually from all parts of the globe. In addition to the superior education and case exposure at the Academy, fellows have substantial opportunities for publications.
The fellowship is a combined training program with the State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Medical Center giving fellows exposure to hospital-based dermatopathology in an urban setting. The fellows spend half of their year in either the department of dermatology or in that of pathology. For those already schooled in pathology, time is also spent in high-volume ambulatory clinics at Kings County Hospital and SUNY Downstate in an effort to provide clinicopathologic correlation. For those already trained in dermatology, hands on experience in the pathology laboratory, including grossing of specimens, learning histology techniques, and participating in daily sign-out enhances capability for dermatopathology.
Only board-eligible or board-certified physicians in dermatology or pathology are able to apply. Fellowship appointments are effective as of July 1 of each academic year. Inquiries regarding applications should be e-mailed to email@example.com.
