Student Curriculum Renewal Subcommittee

General Information and Opinions Subcommittee

Charge

A successful curriculum renewal process takes into account the legitimate interests of all of the stakeholders of the medical school. In order to understand these interests and take them into account as decisions about curriculum renewal are made, this sub-committee will collect and organize the opinions of stakeholders by the 3 principles and 6 competencies. Any other major themes or interests should also be noted.

Other Schools Subcommittee

Chairs: Eve Faber, Fred Volkert

Charge

The Other Schools Committee will do the following:

  1. Select a group of schools that will allow you evaluate not only schools that are similar to our own, but also represent a wide variety of approaches to medical education, particularly innovative approaches.
  2. Describe each school's approach to the three principles of Integration, Collaboration, and Relevance.
  3. Describe how each school addresses the 6 competencies.
  4. Describe any unique features of the school that might be useful to Downstate.

Deliverable

By June 1st, submit a PowerPoint presentation using the attached template. The template will include the following slides:

  1. Title Page with Committee members and chairs
  2. Table of Contents
  3. Each School will have the following set of slides
    1. Model of the school's curriculum
    2. A slide for each principle that summarize how each school addresses the principles.
    3. A slide for each competency that summarizes how each school addresses the competencies.

Goals of Curriculum-Six Competencies

The competencies of Patient Care, Medical Knowledge, Practice-based Learning and Improvement, Interpersonal and Communication Skills, Professionalism, and Systems-based Practice will be central to the curriculum. The specific goals and objectives under each competency will be defined during the curriculum renewal process

Goals and Objectives Subcommittee

Charge

Our curriculum will be organized using by modeling the desired competencies of our graduating medical students on the nationally recognized competencies used for graduate medical education. Using these broad six competencies, this sub-committee will recommend goals, objectives, and measurable outcomes for our graduating students. Because the competency Medical Knowledge encompasses much of medical education, and the bulk of the work of the entire three year curriculum renewal process, the subcommittee will initially focus only on the broad competencies as defined by LCME and national exam content for this competency.

Deliverable

By June 1st, the committee will submit a report with the following.

  1. Title Page with Committee members and chairs
  2. Table of Contents
  3. Each competency will have the following set of slides
    1. A list of Goals
    2. A list if possible of any major objectives for each goal and how it might be assessed
  4. A slide on findings regarding what makes a graduating student competitive

Goals of Curriculum-Six Competencies
