SUNY Downstate College of Medicine Curriculum Renewal

Philosophy of the Approach to Our Curriculum Renewal Process

The three principles of Integration, Collaboration and Relevance are a theme that we hope will mobilize individuals to explore how to develop an integrated medical school curriculum and experience that is relevant to training physicians for today and the future. Because all of the curriculum is being examined, and will be redesigned at the same time, the process involves a large list of stakeholders and potentially effects a large number of parts of our institution.

List of Stakeholders

  • Students
  • Basic Science and Clinical Faculty
  • Executive Committee/Committee on Educational Policy and Curriculum
  • Block and Clerkship Directors
  • Departmental Chairs in the College of Medicine
  • Dean's Office
  • Student Affairs and Academic Development
  • Admissions
  • Office of Minority Affairs
  • Educational Computing/Library and Classroom Services
  • Graduate Medical Education Office and Residents
  • University Hospital and Affiliates
  • Other SUNY Downstate Colleges and Programs
  • Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education
  • Alumni Association

Throughout the Curriculum Renewal Process there will be high stakeholder involvement with two way communication between stakeholders and the Curriculum Renewal Steering Committee. The College of Medicine's Committee on Educational Policy and Curriculum (CEPC) is central to this process and is strongly represented on the Steering Committee. Integrated workgroups and committees with students, faculty from all departments, affiliates and other stakeholder representatives worked to develop Document One which laid out the major curricular design features considered for the new four year curriculum. Similar groups of faculty, students and other stakeholders will continue to define the new curriculum in preparation for the incoming Class of 2012. By mid-2010 we will have a curriculum in mind to begin to work to implement for the incoming Class of 2012. Because change can be difficult and new educational skills may be required, a Faculty Development initiative is also underway. Attention will be paid to what resources and support is needed to implement this new curriculum.
