SUNY Downstate College of Medicine Curriculum RenewalPhilosophy of the Approach to Our Curriculum Renewal ProcessThe three principles of Integration, Collaboration and Relevance are a theme that we hope will mobilize individuals to explore how to develop an integrated medical school curriculum and experience that is relevant to training physicians for today and the future. Because all of the curriculum is being examined, the process involves a large list of stakeholders and potentially affects a large number of parts of our institution. List of Stakeholders
Throughout the Curriculum Renewal Process there will be high stakeholder involvement with two way communication between stakeholders and the Curriculum Renewal Steering Committee. The College of Medicine's Committee on Educational Policy and Curriculum (CEPC) is central to this process and is strongly represented on the Steering Committee. Integrated workgroups and committees with students, faculty from all departments, affiliates and other stakeholder representatives will explore and discuss possibilities for the curriculum. As information is collected, it will be organized, summarized and be re-circulated to stakeholders for comment. Over the three years, we will build a consensus on direction and gradually narrow the work until the options for our new curriculum have been clarified. By mid-2010 we will have a curriculum in mind to begin to work to implement for the incoming Class of 2011. Because change can be difficult and new educational skills may be required, a Faculty Development initiative is also underway. Attention will be paid to what resources and support is needed to implement this new curriculum.
