The tumor suppressor, p27Kip1, inhibits cyclin D-cdk4 in the G0 or quiescent state, but actually activates cyclin D-cdk4 during the rest of the cell cycle (A). This differential activity correlates with a different mobility of the p27-associated complexes, as detected by gel filtration chromatography in the lab of Dr. Stacy Blain. As loss of p27 correlates with poor prognosis in many types of carcinoma understanding its activity will shed light on its role in cancer progression.
