Cancer Research Program

FACULTY AND RESEARCH INTERESTS

Research in the lab of Dr. Olcay Batuman is focused on pathogenesis of the plasma cell cancer, multiple myeloma; endothelial cells colonies resemble angioblasts and affect disease progression. Colony forming endothelial progenitor cells cultured directly from myeloma patients resemble embryonic hemangioblasts and adversely affect disease progression.

The lab of Dr. Henri Tiedge studies the expression of BC200 RNA in invasive breast cancer. Untranslated BC200 RNA is a translational repressor that is expressed in malignant breast tumor cells that have acquired invasive potential. Areas with invasive tumor cells are indicated (T) in dark field (left) and bright field (right) photomicrographs. BC200 expression in invasive tumor areas is revealed by autoradiographic silver grains (pinkish-white in the dark field photomicrograph). No BC200 expression is observed in normal lobular and stromal tissue. BC200 may be a good biomarker of cancer progression.
