Urologic Oncology Center of Excellence

The Urologic Oncology Center of Excellence brings together experts from urology, radiation medicine and medical oncology to offer state-of-the-art, comprehensive care for the treatment of bladder, kidney, prostate and testicular cancers. The focus is to eradicate cancer, preserve function and maintain each patient's quality of life.

The key to successful prostate and genitourinary cancer treatment is multidisciplinary expertise. Patient care is led by specialists in urology, radiation medicine and medical oncology – and is supported by dedicated uro-pathologists using modern diagnostic imaging facilities and at our Cancer Institute. The center features one of the few settings in the New York metropolitan area for men with prostate cancer to see urologist and radiation oncologist in one stop. Every available modern treatment option is within the scope of services and at hand for prostate and genitourinary cancer care at the center.

The physicians are pioneers in the use of groundbreaking treatment technologies and advanced surgical techniques including laparo-endoscopic single site surgery (LESS), which requires just a single small incision to perform even the most complex surgery. The center surgeons were the first in the region to perform a completely robotic neobladder reconstruction for patients with bladder cancer.

The physicians are leaders in minimally invasive surgical treatments. These fellowship-trained specialists in minimally invasive surgery have brought the center to the forefront of laparoscopic and robotic surgery, including laparoscopic/robotic partial nephrectomy, laparo-endoscopic single site surgery (LESS), robotic nerve-sparing prostatectomy and robotic radical cystectomy. The surgeons, specially trained in nerve sparing techniques, are experts in maximizing recovery of urinary and sexual function following prostate surgery.

The Department of Urology provides medical and surgical care to men, women and children with disorders of the kidney, bladder and to men with disorders of prostate, penis and testicles.

Our physicians diagnose and treat many problems: cancer, stone disease, voiding dysfunction, incontinence, impotency, urinary infections and prostate enlargement, hematuria (blood in the urine) are treated. The department has the latest technology, including lasers, a lithotriptor, transrectal ultrasound, penile prostheses, incontinence prostheses and video-urodynamics equipment.

Urology Department provides screening for urologic cancers in patients who have no symptoms, especially for prostate cancer. Once the diagnosis is established the situation is carefully explained. All the potential options for treatment using the most advanced modalities available are explained carefully to the patient and his/her family. The goal is maximally effective treatment with minimum discomfort to the patient. Opportunities are available for patients with advanced malignancies to participate in national clinical trials.
