SUNY Downstate Cancer Institute

Centers of Excellence

Gastrointestinal Center of Excellence

The incidence of colon and rectal diseases in Brooklyn is one of the highest in the country. One in 18 Brooklyn residents will develop colon cancer. The risk of colon cancer is three to ten times higher in individuals with relatives with colon and other cancers. By age 80 one in 10 individuals will be affected with colon cancer. The Gastrointestinal Center of Excellence of the Cancer Institute is an integrated team of physicians and health care professionals that offers the best possible care throughout the continuum of colorectal, stomach, intestinal and pancreatic cancer care including disease prevention, early detection, surgical treatment, radiation and medical oncology treatments. Our team includes surgeons, gastroenterologists, pathologists, radiation oncologists and radiologists. Our experts radiologists utilize advanced imaging techniques such as virtual colonoscopies, magnetic resonance imaging and interventional radiology. Our experienced surgeons have performed thousands of procedures and will discuss the surgical options that are best suited to your individual needs. Whether a patient is a candidate for surgery or not depends on factors such as the type, size, location, grade and stage of the tumor, as well as general health factors such as age, physical fitness and other coexisting medical conditions the patient may have. For many patients, surgery will be combined with other cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy or hormone therapy. These nonsurgical treatments may be administered before surgery (neoadjuvant therapy) or after surgery (adjuvant therapy) to help prevent cancer growth, spread or recurrence. Early in the treatment planning process, we plan for and proactively manage anticipated side effects from surgery. Our team of nurses in collaboration with surgical medical and radiation oncologists support your healing and quality of life. Our reconstructive surgeons perform procedures to restore the body's appearance and function when needed, at the time of surgery or following surgery.
