Photo taken by Emmanuel Joseph On March 22, 2012, Councilman Dr. Mathieu Eugene, accompanied Mr. Michael Harrell, SUNY Downstate Medical Center, Assistant Vice President for Community and Governmental Relations, visited the Brooklyn Alzheimer’s Disease Assistance Center (BADAC). Dr. Carl Cohen, Director of BADAC, explained BADAC’s mission and the need for additional services. BADAC’s vision is to ensure that Brooklyn’s patients with dementia and their caregivers have access to quality services. BADAC welcomes the support of our elected officials and we look forward to future visits and collaborations.
BADAC Board Meeting – February 2011 A dynamic meeting was held with BADAC Board Members on Feb 24, 2011. It was the first meeting this year and elected officials, community leaders and individuals were represented. Attendees: Dr. Andreas Adams, Onyekachi (Kachi)Akoma, Lorraine Brooks, State Committeewoman Melba Brown, Dr. Una Clarke, Dr. Carl Cohen, MD, Catherine Cozzolino, Marguerite DeAbreu, Louis Ebarb, Father Felice, Joan McGowan, Sharen McKinney-Alston, Umi Muhammed, Christopher Nadeau, Kevin O'Mara, Maria Roca, Tina Salerno, Lorna Walcott-Brown, and Margaret Briggs. Call-ins: Dr. Warachal Faison, Deputy Yvonne Graham and Bruce Morrow (Cousin Brucie, American radio personality from Brooklyn and Radio Hall of Famer). Favorable outcomes were: introductions to newest members, acceptance of proposal for Capital Funding Requests from the Brooklyn Borough President and NYC Council Delegations. The proposal will be in phases: Planning, Design, Demolition, Temporary Construction, and Replacement of BADAC. Notification for grant approval: April, 2011 - Borough President; July, 2011- City Council. Other discussions included exploration for program funding through: State and Foundations, AARP, Department of Mental Health, Department of the Aging, Dormitory Authority, grants for research, State Senators, Assembly Persons, NYC Council, Congresswomen Yvette Clarke's and Councilman Jumanne Williams' offices. Upcoming events were highlighted: BADAC's journal, Odyssey: Poetry and Art From Life Journeys and BADAC's Fall Reception . The BADAC staff continues to reach out to elected officials for guidance and support. The meeting on April 14, 2010 at the Brooklyn Borough President's Office solidified the support from Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz and his team. The outcomes were: commitment to attend board meetings, support for an application to the City Council for funding, and ongoing communication. The BADAC staff was pleased with the participation from the Brooklyn Borough President Office and the opportunity to develop a relationship with key officials to realize BADAC's mission and vision.
