Alumni Association - College of MedicinePresident's Greeting
My fellow alumni: We here at the Alumni Association have been looking at our accomplishments of the past year and would like to share some of them with you. The Alumni Fund for 2006-2007 academic year awarded $347,000 in grants. The largest grants were for tuition scholarships and totaled $154,000, approximately half of our funding. Summer Research Fellows received $66,000, Health Care in Developing Countries was granted $33,000 and the Mentoring Programs were allocated $9,000; together these programs accounted for approximately 75% of our disbursements. Other student activities which we supported included the White Coat Ceremony, AOA and Daniel Hale Williams Society programs and student conferences. None of this would have been possible without alumni support. Richard Sadovsky '74, our Immediate Past President, is to be congratulated on his achievements during his tenure. Our energy needs to continue to enhance student life at Downstate and to provide increased funds for a variety of on-going and new projects. One of our new projects is to help students make career and specialty choices. This year for the second time, on July 6, 2007, we held 15 panels for third year students introducing them to alumni practicing in diverse specialties in a variety of settings. This, combined with our year-long program to place students with practicing alumni to help students learn about different specialty opportunities, is making the Alumni Association a major resource for career and specialty decisions. As we expand our efforts in support of our students we need your help. Please consider contributing, in both your time and financial support. Jill Ditchik, our Executive Director and I are always available to listen to your suggestions and our future efforts depend on you!
Best regards for health and happiness in the coming year. Sincerely, Helen Flamenbaum, MD’78
