My Fellow Alumni:

As we begin the new academic year, I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the hard work and leadership of our Immediate Past President, Dr. Helen Flamenbaum, and to review with you some of the activities and accomplishments of the past year.

Our Alumni Reunion was a great success, providing an excellent opportunity for our graduates to get together and renew old friendships. We had excellent representation from our 25 and 50 year classes at the Dinner Dance, and the Sunday Brunch, held for our 5 and 10 year classes, was also very well attended.

Last year the Alumni Fund awarded $344,000 in grants. Tuition scholarship grants accounted for almost 50%, totaling $158,000. We awarded $70,000 in Summer Research Fellowships, $33,000 to help support the Health Care in Developing Countries elective and $9,000 to support the Mentoring Program. We also helped support the White Coat Ceremony, student conferences, the new student-run clinic and programs run by the AOA and the Daniel Hale Williams Society.

Our Mentoring Program activities continue to expand. In addition to our work with first year students, we provide additional mentoring opportunities for students interested in specific specialties. We are also involved with the Transition to Clerkship, a day in which students beginning their third year clinical rotations learn about the specialties in which they will be working by meeting with panels of alumni active in those specialties.

We rely upon the contributions of our Alumni to enable us to continue our work. I would like to thank all of you who have helped support us in the past. I would encourage those of you who have not been active in the Alumni Association to consider joining us and to consider contributing your time and financial support to our activities.

We are interested in hearing from our Alumni. Jill Ditchik, our Executive Director, and I are always available to listen your suggestions and to answer your questions.

All of us in the Alumni Association wish you the very best in the future.

Sincerely,

Steve Piecuch MD '79
President
