Alumni Association - College of Medicine
Greetings from the Executive Director
I welcome all alumni and other friends to peruse our website to see what the Alumni Association has done and continue to accomplish for over 130 years. I have been the Executive Director for 17 years. Over this time, I have seen the alumni become more active in supporting tuition scholarships, student research, Mentoring and Career Mentoring Programs, the White Coat Ceremony and other student initiatives. Providing both financial support and actively promoting a student friendly environment have always been the top priorities of the organization, including the Board and staff.
My background is in social work and I received my masters at Washington University. I received my undergraduate degree in Psychology at Binghamton University, which like SUNY Downstate is an exceptional state supported university. My 2 siblings also attended state universities including my bother Andy Ditchik, graduating from SUNY Downstate, Class of 1988. My family enjoys a long standing respect for and dedication to the SUNY schools.
I enjoy my role in providing important services for students and helping alumni reconnect with one another. This is especially meaningful as it is my brother's Alma mater. Also, I am continually inspired by the dedication and generosity of many our alumni who appreciate the invaluable training they received at Downstate and want to give back through their financial support and volunteering their time. The students are grateful and heartened when they learn they are receiving a tuition scholarship, research fellowship or another grant supported by generous alum dedicated to the student's well being. It means a lot to them. Many of our students want to help provide medical service to those with limited access. The Alumni Association supports the Student Run Brooklyn Free Clinic and Health Care in Developing Countries elective which are both popular among our students. Upon graduation many alumni continue providing medical services to underserved populations both here in the US and abroad.
I take pride in the outstanding Alumni Today magazine produced by our talented editor, Constance Shames, MD '63, who is also Past President. Our Alumni Reunions are festive occasions, including a tour of the school, an excellent scientific program and of course the gala dinner dance.
Join us for the upcoming gala reunion weekend (May 17-19, 2013) being held at the Brooklyn Marriott. Become involved in mentoring, help locate lost classmates, attend Board meetings and support the programs which help our medical students. Thank you and best wishes to you for a wonderful year ahead.
