June, 2013:Summer's Here!
This month will include the first day of summer in the third week. After having our metropolitan area (NY/NJ/LI) suffer terribly from last fall’s hurricane (Sandy), everyone will be rejoicing and celebrating the reopening of beaches.
Let’s be careful out there! Not everyone is a superior swimmer. The best way to ensure you are teaching your loved ones to be respectful of the ocean and of any body of water is to start them with lessons as early as possible. Some recommend at the age of one but certainly by age four it would be most prudent. Log onto http://www.ripcurrents.noaa.gov/week.shtml for information about the Jersey shore and Rockaway/Coney Island area beaches and rip currents that can occur. ALWAYS swim where lifeguards patrol and NEVER swim under a red flag or where no guards are on duty.
Another key issue for our Downstate community may be the disease called Sickle Cell. You may have friends or relatives with this illness. A famous hip-hop performer, T-Boz, (Tionne Watkins) has this disease but has been able to live well with it following certain guidelines. So does Tiki Barber the football player. So, on June 19th, 2013, please find a way to participate, perhaps by encouraging anyone – OF ANY RACE – to register in the bone marrow registry.
Finally, on June 27th, 2013, be tested for the HIV virus that causes AIDS. This is simply to ensure that you are healthy and anyone you love/have been intimate with may also be free of this disease.
