Feburary, 2013:Love is on the wing!
‘Tis the month of Cupid’s influence and we are ready! Or are we? Are we really among those ‘afflicted’ with love? Let’s try, for ourselves and for those around us.
February 7th is National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day and this is important to the Downstate community. As the Healthy Black Communities organization recommends (http://www.blackaidsday.org ) there is plenty to do and to learn.
On the day of love – the 14th of this month! – we should consider that National Donor Day means thinking about what we can offer – whether when we are gone and would no longer need corneas or other organs and tissue or if alive and can offer something more significant such as a kidney or bone marrow. This is one way to show caring and compassion to those in need during the month of love.
And in honor of the Valentine’s Day intent, which should be about true love, February is also Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. Go to www.loveisrespect.org or www.teendvmonth.org for resources for counselors, healthcare providers, teens and parents or teachers. You can provide a link to teens you know who may need to learn about the definition of abuse; and there is a YouTube video entitled, “What is Love?”
Let Cupid’s arrows strike! February is for loving responses.
