March, 2011: Breathe Deep!

March doesn't just go in like a lion and out like a lamb every year.  March brings us important reminders about health and wellness!

For instance, March 13-19 this year is National Pulmonary Rehabilitation Week.  Here are some key URLs linking you to free videos (the AACVPR link) as well as key information about managing COPD.  Did you know that second only to heart disease is lung cancer for the leading killer of men and women?

NORMAL LUNGS
Normal lungs and alveoli

The lungs are located in the chest cavity and are responsible for respiration. The alveoli are small sir sacs where oxygen is exchanged in the lungs.

CANCEROUS LUNGS
Large cell carcinoma
Non-small cell carcinomas are the most common lung cancers.

It is not surprising, then, that March 23rd is Kick Butts Day - a campaign to keep children from starting tobacco usage:  www.tobaccofreekids.org .

How do we stay away from tobacco and keep our young adults away from it, too?  Good nutrition can help - and March 7-11 is National School Breakfast Week during National Nutrition Month.  Go to www.schoolnutrition.org  and also to  www.eatright.org for more information.

Let's breathe freely during the windy month of March so that when spring does arrive, we can enjoy ourselves!
