In January 2000, a group of four women from various departments came together to support one another in their weight loss mission. Soon after, the opportunity came from SUNY Downstate President, Dr. John LaRosa, by way of the strategic planning process, to organize A Healthy Downstate Program (AHD) for all employees. The mission of the program is to provide free or low-cost nutrition and fitness programs that are conveniently located on campus.

AHD offers a variety of classes for every fitness level, (regardless of any medical or health limitation). AHD also introduced At Work Weight Watchers, which follows the USDA food guidelines for weight loss. AHD has been so successful that it has been replicated in churches, schools, and we have presented our program at several national conferences. In addition, we have partnered with the All Women’s Triathlon Team to inspire and encourage women to participate in future triathlons.

We are pleased that part of the proceeds we collect from our participants provides an award to a graduating MPH student. We hope that you will find a class that best suits your needs and we look forward to your participation.
