About A Healthy Downstate

In January 2000 a group of four women came together to support one another in their weight loss mission and decided to start a work site wellness program for our co workers.  In September 2000 the Healthy Downstate Program was co founded by Rose Jackman and Nancy Victor.   Rose Jackman is responsible for fitness classes and Nancy coordinates the “At Work Weight Watchers” Program.    The classes vary from Aerobics and Strength training, to dance classes, yoga, Tai Chi, walking, stair climbing and running.  We offer private nutrition consultations and an At Work Weight watchers Program

Research
A Healthy Downstate Program conducted numerous studies which were presented and published in abstract form for the American Public Health Association, the US Department of Health and Human Services, and many other publications.  The Program has been replicated in churches and in school settings for parents and teachers

Awards
A Healthy Downtate has received numerous grants from The Office of the President at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, University Hospital of Brooklyn, Greater Southern Brooklyn Health Coalition Brooklyn, and the NYC Department of Health.
Each year we give an award to a graduating student in Public Health at SUNY Downstate Medical Center.

Future Plans
Moving forward, A Healthy Downstate intends to implement its wellness programs into our affiliated hospitals and medical centers which include LICH, Bayridge and Neighborhood centers.
