Alumni Association School of Graduate StudiesDean's LetterDear SGS Alumni, It is very exciting to have, at long last, an Alumni Association of our school. I welcome you to the Associations Web site and hope that after browsing through its pages you will come away sharing my enthusiasm for this historic event. I would also like to invite you to visit the Schools Web site. There are a lot of new developments at the School, and our accomplishments will, certainly, make you proud. Id like to mention a few. Our latest great news is the approval by the SUNY Provosts office of our proposal for a joint PhD program with Brooklyn Polytechnic University in Biomedical Engineering. The proposal is now under the final review at the NY State Education Department. Another development full of potential benefits for the school is construction, already in its second phase, of a Biotechnology Incubator adjacent to our campus. The Incubator will be a launching point for many of our faculty whose work leads to significant medical products and technologies. In addition, it will enrich research, training and career opportunities for our students. It is a source of great satisfaction for me and the faculty that our graduates consistently go on to postdoctoral positions at such noteworthy institutions as Johns Hopkins, Princeton, Memorial Sloan Kettering, Center for Neurobiology & Behavior of Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons, and Neurosurgery at NYU. One of our recent alumni, Fuqiang Geng, PhD, 2004, was the only PhD in the SUNY system to receive a 2004 Chancellors Award for Student Excellence. Dr. Geng is now doing a postdoctoral fellowship in Molecular Biology at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. No matter how much we accomplish, there is always more to be done. An alumni association with many dedicated and active members can make a difference in the schools growth and development, and it can greatly enhance the experience of our students. I look forward to your participation in the Associations activities and seeing you at the events sponsored by the Association. Susan Schwartz-Giblin, Ph.D. |
